Spring 2011 Trend Event

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 12.1.10, Seattle Fashion Group International is hosting a Spring 2011 Trend Event at Seattle Design Center from 7-9pm (check in begins at 6:30pm). This event will feature a DVD exhibiting the top upcoming trends from Paris, New York, Milan, and more. Following the DVD will be a panel discussion comprised of leading fashion and beauty experts in the Seattle area including Terri Morgan founder of TCM Models, Christina Draper Design Director of the Womens Private Label Lines at Zumiez Inc., Leatrice Eisman, head of the Eiseman Center for Color Information & Training and executive director of the Patone Color Institute, and Kim Lunden, Style Director of Gene Juarez.

Tickets for this event can be purchased here through Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, but this event has limited seating, so advanced ticket purchase is encouraged.

Price includes admission, sips, snacks, and swag!

This past weekend I was, again, inspired by the fashion show presented by the students from the Bunka Women's Fashion University in Japan. I've attended the show every year since I moved out here. Each year is a visual treat and gets my creative juices flowing! Seattle is lucky to get to see this production, and it is all thanks to FGI Member Hisako Nakaya at Seattle Central Community College. She has been bringing the group back to Seattle for the last 9 years. Thanks Hisako!

TCM Models: A Boutique Approach

TCM Models has been around for 31 years (since 1979!) and has been a major industry player for both models and actors in the Pacific Northwest. Taking on a select 400 models and 100 talent, TCM uses a self proclaimed “boutique” approach to the business to encourage the personalized development of quality skills in their models and talent. They do this in an effort to provide their clients with assets, not challenges in working with TCM models/talent. That rocks!

Terri C. Morgan is the founder and director of TCM models. She is also a former model herself giving her the unique experience to see the industry from both sides: that of the model/talent and that of the agency. What an advantage that must give!

Recap of the Front Row Fashion Show with Courtney & Sydney

The Bellevue Collection presented their annual Fashion Week presented by Vogue. Our Regional Director, Courtney Russell, and Board Member, Sydney Mintle, of Styled.Seattle and CRAVE, were taking notes while our new Membership Chair, Danielle Bortone-Holt, of Brick House Photography, and Board Member Mike Adams, also a photographer, were shooting the show.

We chatted with Courtney and Sydney (pictured above) to get their thoughts on this season's trend and the show, in general.

Q: What was your favorite section? why?

Sydney: "Animal Magnetism" was my favorite! I'm really looking forward to wearing leopard prints this fall!

Courtney: I liked "Fur and Feathers" more than I thought I would, but I think my favorite collection was "American Sportswear." I'm loving the infusion of Mad Men inspired looks!

Q: What was a hit?

Courtney: My top three would be really high boots or really low ankle boots paired with colored tights, gem tones - teal, eggplant, ruby paired with camel, gray and black, and the hats - I loved the hats!

Sydney: There were lots of hits! I loved the faux fur vests paired with skinny belts, the color spectrum of tights paired with skirts and dresses, and the menswear trousers.

Q: What was a miss?

Sydney: I didn't notice any misses. Although some of the male models were wearing high water pants and it was obviously not planned that way.

Courtney: I agree about the pants...it was distracting to see on the runway, but we know they pull the show together in a week! I was hoping for a different look to come down the runway with the "Sweater Girls" collection than what was presented, but although it was not what I was expecting it was done well.

Q: What one fashion trend will you be sure to have in your wardrobe this year?

Courtney: I have some great pieces that I think are still going to work this Fall (colored tights, ankle boots, a dark purple/eggplant dress I love), that I want to pair with some of those sleek hats or mile high boots.

Sydney: Something military inspired like a khaki trench coat paired with a suede ankle boot.

Q: Thank you to you both for sharing your thoughts from the show. Any other thoughts about this year's Front Row Fashion Show presented by Vogue at The Bellevue Collection?

Sydney: It was fun, and I was happy to see such a packed house ready and willing to celebrate fall fashion!
Courtney: It was a lot of fun, I agree. I'm so glad Vogue continues to support The Bellevue Collection Fashion Week. It's important for our industry up here in the Pacific Northwest.

VIP Party Kicks off Bellevue Fashion Week

Tuesday, August 24th was the VIP kickoff Party for Bellevue Fashion Week. The event was held at the Twisted Cork at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue. On display was the new book American Fashion Designers at Home authored by Rima Suqi, along with the new collection from designer Cynthia Rowley. Models posed on platforms with Rowley's designs that included retro fabrics and ostrich feathers.

In partnership with Assouline and CFDA, the event was hosted by Karen Moyer of the Moyer Foundation. Delectable treats and drinks were provided by Twisted Cork of the Hyatt. It was a beautiful and fashionable event with many fashion industry professionals attending.

FGI Passport to Fashion a success!

July 22nd was the perfect warm, sunny day for FGI Seattle's Passport to Shopping event in Madison Valley. With the added support of the Madison Valley Merchants Association, over 20 local businesses in this trendy neighborhood remained open later to invite shoppers in and contributed to various goody bags and raffle prizes.

Vian Hunter House of Fashion was the center of activity, where guests picked up freshly baked macarons and "passports" to bring to the local businesses where they could get stamped in order to win goody bags. Shoppers also earned an additional raffle ticket for every $10 they spent at the shops which were all within walking distance. Goody bags were given to the first 10 people to visit 10 vendors and return their cards to Casa Del Caffe.

Some of the shops offered wine tastings and free samples. The brightly colored pink "passport" cards attracted the curiosity of passersby as they asked what was going on and how they could get involved. The night concluded with a raffle, offering prizes such as $100 Gift Certificate to Vian Hunter, a classic manicure at Frenchy's and Introduction to Knitting lessons at Tricoter.

Be on the lookout for the next trendy neighborhood take-over from FGI. You can bet it will be the hippest way to share a shopping spree with friends on a summery evening.

UW Fashion: Concept to Market Certificate Program Final Presentations

June 7th, 2010 The FGI Sponsored the UW Fashion Concept to Market Certificate Final Presentations. Twelve students presented their marketing concept and designs to Fashion Professionals, FGI members and other students. Each were given a chance to spend ten minutes with FGI Board members for their presentation and a question and answer period. The work varied from hats and petite shoes to a line of ballroom dancewear and knitted dresses. An amazing UW themed desert buffet was presented by Half Past Lavish and included macrons from Starry Nights Catering and Trophy Cupcakes.

FGI member, Giuseppe Grazioli, spent some time with local foodie, Kathy Casey! Here is the adventure straight from her:

Seattle Dances! It was fun ... and I did not fall on my freaking a!%
I want to personally thank everyone for all their support and votes! I trained hard and danced my heart out Charleston-ing on stage. YES – it was stressful! But I’m happy to say I now know how to do something other than disco down, thanks to my dancing instructor Josh Welter!

It all came together this past Sat., Mar. 13th. The event started at 5:30 pm but I was up and getting ready at 11:00 am! I can’t say that I was that nervous … okay, who am I kidding? I was absolutely jittery and panicky! I’d rather shake up a cocktail or cook up a storm in front of thousands than do the Charleston in front of the judges. Sheesh!

The night started off with a signature cocktail called the Lizzie Highfly that my gang shook up in honor of a great 1929 Charleston dancer. It’s fresh raspberries, Pearl Vodka and fresh lemon juice, topped with a lush raspberry foam made with Monin Raspberry Syrup and a sprinkle of edible gold flakes!

hen there was a silent auction and then a live auction during dinner—I wasn’t really sure what went on during this time because I was in the green room getting ready!

The dancers took the stage at around 8:45 and we gave it our all! All the dance sets were incredible. You can watch the event on the Seattle Dances! website.

Because of your help, the other dancers and myself, as well as Plymouth Housing Group raised over $400,000! That’s just truly amazing! None of us could have done it without your amazing inspiration, great encouragement, and wonderful resolve to support the Plymouth Housing Group.

Razor Clam Lovers Unite!
It’s almost here! Sat., Mar. 27th in Ocean Shores, Washington. I will be hosting the 4th Annual Razor Clam Festival from 10:00 – 6:00 pm at the Ocean Shores Convention Center. It’ll be a clam-tastic event filled with lots of great activities: a clam dance, a clam chowder cook-off, and of course, razor clam digging!

A Firefighters' All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast will precede clam fest activities from 7:00–9:45 am. Tickets are $5 at the door. (The breakfast is ok but the firemen who serve it are HOT… and that just makes it better!)
Events will include live music all day long, an Artisans' Marketplace featuring NW artists, contests for the best–decorated clam shovel & clam gun (CRAFTERS take note!!) and a Kids Zone with visits from the Ocean Shores Pirates. And of course there’s lots of clam chowder, great Bloody Mary’s and plenty of good eats!
Come join me for fun clam festivities! Admission is $2 for adults, and children under 12 are free! A great deal for a weekend trip to enjoy some good salt air and get your fill of clams!

The Buzz is on …
…and the bees will be a lot closer than you think! The Ballard Dish D’Lish and Ballard Bee Honey have plans in the works to install hives in our back garden area. Beekeeper and honey man extraordinaire, Corky Luster, reassures us (and I’m not the biggest fan of bee stings!) that the bees are docile and super–passive. I know because all last summer his bees were zooming around our back garden—especially near our fennel—and didn’t mind me getting in their way at all.

Have you tried Ballard Bee Honey yet? If not, stop in Dish D’Lish and grab a bottle for yourself. It’s mighty delicious! And there is also a Bee Happy for Summer event in the works … stay tuned on Twitter!

Egypt – Yes, I am jealous I didn’t go!
But, hey, I’ve been to Miami for the Cheers Beverage conference … Vegas for the Night Club and Bar Show … BUT Keith Waldbauer, my Sr. Mixologist Associate, did get to go to Egypt, where he opened the new Fairmont Nile City’s bars and trained all the bar staff. Keith had an amazing trip. As you can see, he did squeeze in a little time for an adventure to the Giza Plateau … Keith how did you reach the top of that pyramid?!

My To-Do list has included "join the 3/50 project - post on site and FB" since July. At the end of October I went to the site, signed up and started reading. Cinda Baxter's question to retailers hit me between the eyes.

"So, do you want to be around a year from now?"

I was shocked! Then I stopped to consider. What could I do to make a significant difference. I knew that I had a platform and forum to start the conversation and get the word out. I started pounding the pavement, visiting shops, inviting them to attend our meeting on Tuesday, November 24 and now I am hoping that you will feel the same way I do.

I could put this passion and energy to work for a charitable cause, I have done so in the past and will again in the future. I guess it all boils down to 'I Love Retail', it's like a virus for me, it's in my blood and I want it to be vital, healthy, vibrant and fun again! It's theater and drama and dynamic and exciting when it is done well...and so many places I love do it brilliantly.

Some of my friends have said that they "are tired of not shopping". Nothing has changed for them, they are among the 90% still employed, still have credit cards, still have dinner out and spa appointments. But some where along the line, they stopped shopping and started feeling like they needed to do the 'patriotic' thing and follow Suze Orman's advice. I almost came through the television to throttle her last year when she said "stop spending! start saving!" It's good advice, but everything in moderation folks! I actually had someone tell me it was unfashionable to shop!

I believe that even if you have to buy less, you should spend local.

Local business spins the wheels of the economy. It is where the jobs are generated, the sale tax revenue comes from, it creates the neighborhoods. Let's share the love a little this next year and keep our purchases local.

Tonight was the exclusive FGI event sponsored by Luly Yang at her beautiful shop in downtown Seattle.

The evening kicked off with mingling and networking of people throughout the fashion industry. Appetizers and champagne were passed and then we met in the bridal room to learn a bit about FGI. We tried to keep the program short so that people could spend more time chatting with guests.

Each and every person who came was fabulous and we are so thankful to have had them. For everyone involved and who came, thank you so much for your support! A special thanks goes out to Luly Yang for hosting the event!

Eco-Lavish Fashion Show Re-Cap

On October 9th, The much anticipated Eco-Lavish fashion show was held in the hip neighborhood, Georgetown at The Engine Room. Sadly, I missed the pre-party of networking, shopping and goodie bags. However we managed to squeeze plenty of that in after the show!

First up on the runway was Six Degrees with Think Now Jewelry, then Deco Modiste with Flutter Budget Jewelry, then Texture Clothing with Otra Vez Jewelry and the finale designer was Lizzie Parker with Rockstar Jewelry.

There were so many things I wanted from that show - it makes me thankful they weren't all setup selling their clothing or I would have bankrupt myself. So many cute dresses, skirts, tops, jewelry... Oh my! (My UFN associate, Youa, took some amazing photos, check them out here!)

After the show it quickly turned into a fabulous networking opportunity - I chatted with designers, fashion bloggers, models and more. The evening continued to be a really wonderful time of making new friends and meeting some people face-to-face for the first time. Rather than writing this like a dear diary entry just know that there are some amazing designers and bloggers in this city and I am so happy to have met them and look forward to spending more time getting to know them all. Thanks Courtney for putting on such an amazing show and bringing everyone together!

Re-cap from Vogue Fashion Show in Bellevue

We saw many FGI members and friends at the Vogue show during Bellevue Fashion week, but if you missed the show this year, Danielle Bortone-Holt, FGI member and owner of Brickhouse Photography (http://www.brickhousephotography.com/) shared a few photos with us! Enjoy!

The show was divided into a number of sections. The model above is decked out in an 80's redux outfit. I was more impressed with this section than I thought I would be. Often, "The 80's" is a garish caricature neon memories of the decade rather than a true composition of 80's fashion, and rarely updated for the current era. While there was some neon, and some horrible Ray-Bans, there was a lot of looks that really would work in 2009. Really.

The evening wear collection was a highlight for many, although there was nothing too stunning or too surprising for a closing finale. The section was very polished, and there was a nice variety of looks at a number of price points.

My favorite section was the "Lady Sophisticate" section. Some of the best looks were from the new Ann Taylor collection. I had heard Ann Taylor had updated their image, and the new pieces did not fail me. I'm very excited to continue to see the new direction Ann Taylor moves in.

Seattle’s Fashion Group International is hosting a fall fashion event on Tuesday November 10th at Ummelina Day Spa. Event highlights include a mini trunk show presented by Betsey Blach from Cashmere Wrappings, complimentary hand massages and foot soaks from Ummelina Day Spa and a special presentation by FGI member Margaret Spencer who is a Seattle-based wardrobe stylist. “As a Personal Stylist, I empower women to be their personal best and help find the right fit for their individual shape,” says Margaret. Admission to this event is free to all FGI members and $10 for general admission.

Designers, are you eco-friendly, live/work in the PNW, looking for professional exposure? The 2nd annual EcoLavish Fashion show is looking for 2 more eco-friendly designers to add to this year’s fashion show roster. Designers would need to show 8 – 10 looks. Professional hair and make-up is provided, and there is a pre-event photo shoot with acclaimed photographer Kathryn Barnard (for a list of her clients check out her site at www.kathrynbarnardphoto.com).

EcoLavish will be held on October 9. 2009 at The Engine Room in Georgetown Studios with an expected attendance of 200.

Interested in Being a Board Member?

We want you! We would like to invite you to next month's FGI Seattle Board meeting on July 30th at Westlake Tutta Bella at 7pm (RSVP to me). We are looking to add to our already dynamic board and wanted to extend the invitation out to current members who may be interested in serving on the FGI Board.

The time commitment is relatively low and the only financial commitment is to pay your membership dues (which you have probably already done) and pay the nominal fee at FGI events that you already attend. There are a variety of roles and projects to be involved in from a Board Secretary to membership to programming, pr, and more (see below). You would need to be available to attend monthly board meetings (usually second Tuesday of the month in downtown Seattle for 1.5 hours) and come to or help plan some events and post on the blog. Otherwise it's a lot of networking and building visibility for FGI.

The board is at a turning point where we see your involvement being incredibly helpful and vital to the success of the board.

Please give this some thought and let me know what questions you may have.

Trip To italy and Greece

I am taking my students to Europe this summer, the trip start on Aug 24 to Italy and Greece for 10 days. I was thinking because I can add 6 more people for this trip we can announce it on FGI board, this trip is very fun and educational.

We are going to Rome, Florence Sorrento, and from Sorrento to Pompeii and with Free over night we will go to Greece. In Greece we will visit some island and then we will go to Athens. This is very exciting trip that I recommend to every body especially fashion Designer an people that they like fashion.

The price for under 23 in $3350 and for over 23 is $3800 that covers every thing from ticket, hotel all the transportation and ticket to the places we will go and 24 hours English language director that he or she stay in our hotel also breakfast and dinner.

If you traveler don't shop, they don't have have any other expense.

Bob Mackie and More...

Tonight I was invited by my friend, and FGI cohort, Courtney Russell of Half Past Lavish Events to attend the Spotlight Night for "Catch Me If You Can" at the 5th Ave Theater in Seattle.

I wasn't sure what to expect because I had no idea they did these spotlight events and wasn't sure what they entailed. Plus, it's free so I was even more baffled.

However, I am really happy I went because they introduce you to the people who have come up with the idea, or in this case have taken a story and made it into a musical. I saw the movie and really did enjoy it so I can only imagine I'll feel the same way about the play. We did get to hear a few songs from the performance and I must say they sounded amazing.

Infamous fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie is doing all of the costumes for the musical and they even showed us some of his sketchers... They were awesome! One thing I wish would have happened - more conversation with Bob Mackie. I would have liked it if more questions would have been asked of him, especially about the costumes. Oh well... I'll just have to go see them myself!

If this show takes off it will be another win for Seattle (Hello, Hairspray!) as it is being started here. It will be showing July 23rd - August 16th. I can't wait - the guy who plays Frank Abagnale Jr. (Aaron Tveit) is just a cutie and has an amazing voice. As you can see by the picture I have posted for you - A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!

Not a Typical Wednesday Night...

If only all Wednesday nights could be this fun! Tonight was an FGI networking event held at the 24/7 staffing agency (they have an amazing space and are always so kind to us!) where local student designer, Tera Bacon showcased 7 of her designs.

The night started out with Tera being introduced and a mini Q&A with Janaea and Susan of Beauty Revolution Magazine. One interesting fact I learned that not only is Tera a designer but she also works in construction. She is multi faceted!

Tera's models came out wearing 3 beautiful dresses! I didn't take notes on how they were constructed as I was taking videos but I do remember that she said she liked to use vintage pieces she finds in her creations. The red dress was the dress she created for Project Red Dress.

After the fashion show ended the networking began, along with enjoying cupcakes by Wink and drinking wine. I got the opportunity to chat with several women who I have been communicating with via email - putting a face to a name makes all the difference!

Nina Ummel, the owner of Ummelina, invited us over to do a tour of her day spa and treated us all to some delicious tea created there at the tea spa. I have personally been to the day spa many times and know that it is a wonderfully relaxing experience. (They have a fantastic couples package called the Pacific Rim that I highly recommend!)

The night was a wonderful success and completely planned by FGI board member, Courtney of Half Past Lavish Events. Great job girl!! (insert standing ovation here.) ;)

If you weren't able to attend this event, don't fret, we will be having many more and I'll mke sure to notify you here. Hope to see you soon!

FGI Seattle will be showcasing a new, local student designer at our next Networking Night on April 15, 2009 at 24 Seven Talent in Seattle. We caught up with Tera Bacon to get the scoop on who she is, what she designs, and who she designs for. Read the details below:

FGI Seattle: When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?

Tera: An interest in Fashion design came at a very early age for me. When I was little I would steal white cotton shop rags from my parent’s painting company and hand sew outfits for my friends and myself in my back yard play fort. I would make mini skirts, tube tops and even accessories. I made full length gloves by tracing my hand and lower arm. I even ripped down my white lace curtains in my fort to use as veils. This was all done for the iconic 1980’s Madonna look.

FGI Seattle: Who inspires you? What designers do you look up to and why?

Tera: I’m mostly inspired by high fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano for Christian Dior, and Valentino. I look to John Galliano couture when I have a designer’s block. It usually doesn’t take me long to get inspired and pumped up to sketch out some ideas. The classic beauty of these designers’ ready to wear collections have trends that I like to emulate when designing women’s career wear. I love the classic look of a tailored jacket over a simple two piece look.

FGI Seattle: What is your design aesthetic?

Tera: I would say my design aesthetic is mostly commercial. I want to create looks that real women would wear and feel comfortable and confident in from day to day. My looks are usually fitted so using plush fabrics like silk and stretch cottons are a must. I would like to say my looks are sexy not because of skin exposure but because of figure flattering shapes.

FGI Seattle: What garment are you most proud of and why?

Tera: I am most proud of my red dress that I made for Fashion Group International’s Project Red Dress. We were given a budget of $200 from Pacific Fabrics and 16 hours to complete, from scratch, our design. Being one of 10 student designers picked from local fashion schools was an honor in itself. My red dress was the first gown that I had ever sketched let alone made, so I faced many challenges in this competition. This project not only challenged my sewing skills but my ability to cope with extreme pressure. The payoff was well worth it; the event was so beautiful. My model Beth Knierim looked amazing with her entire look put together with the help from Gene Juarez.

FGI Seattle: In three words how would you describe yourself as a designer?

Tera: Ready to wear

FGI Seattle: What music do you listen to to help motivate you when working?

Tera: Music is the least tasteful thing about me. I mostly listen to Rap and Hard Rock; anything to get me amped throughout my day.

FGI Seattle: What celebrity would you like to design for? Why? And, what would the garment look like?

Tera: Well, since I am a huge Battlestar Galactica fan I would love to dress any of the female cast members for the red carpet. I would love to see the statuesque Six, Tricia Helfer, in my red dress at an event.

NEW YORK —— Supima's second Competition for Emerging Designers is the lead story in this week's "Chic Report" on industry leader Fashion Week Daily.

Here, in a story headlined "Cotton Chic" and illustrated with a huge photo (at right) of Thommy Douglass's scarf-neck Supima gown, is what Meg Prossnitz had to say in her "Runway Fever" column: It could have been a Project Runway challenge: aspiring designers must create a complete collection using only cotton. But last night’s event at Gotham Hall was no reality tv show–it was the second annual Supima Competition for Emerging Designers. Preparation began last November, when designer hopefuls went to the Thompson Hotel armed with portfolios and prepared to face a panel of judges including Parsons professor and Costume Institute fellowship holder Lisa Santandrea. The 21 finalists selected who showed at the event were Astrid Brucker, Nikki Demoneris, Victor De Souza, Thommy Douglass, Andrew C. Dyrdahl, Ari Harris, Yin Ting Huang, Lina Gatineau-Elder, Marie Jdo, Nicole Jimenez, Kimenna, Lisa Lau, Katya Leonovich, Albert Lopez, Christine Mayes, Anna McCraney, Karen Sabag, Kurt Smith, Courtney Yates, and Prizy Sebastian.

Innovative interpretations of these traditional fabrics won awards, such as Andrew Dyrdahl, who took home the prize for best knit design for his jersey long-sleeved gown with a corset made of Supima cotton and denim (”I love the contrast of soft and rigid,” the designer explained) and a voluminous maroon ballskirt of shirting paried with a saffron jersey crop top. “I really like to do eveningwear out of non-traditional fabrics. Anyone can take amazing fabric and make a beautiful dress out of it, but to take an ordinary fabric and make something extraordinary is much more of a challenge.” Kimenna, winner of best in show, cited the architecture of Antonio Gaudi as the inspiration for her designs. Argentinian Victor de Souza, who took home the prize for best execution in denim, cited his inspiration as “Reworked classics.” He lived up to the notion with a beige evening gown that we never would have guessed was made of denim.

Supima VP of marketing Buxton Midyette stressed the versatility of the fabric. “It’s all about rethinking why luxury denim is just in jeans and why super strong knits are only in t-shirts, why shirting only ends up in shirting. There’s potential for so much more than that. The runway is no longer just the domain of taffeta, organza, and silks.” Judging from the innovative designs the new crop of designers sent down the runway, prepare to be blown away.

FGI SEATTLE ANNOUNCES MOVIN 92.5 EMCEES CONFIRMED; TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR PROJECT RED DRESS

February 13, 2009 marks the second annual Project Red Dress event in Seattle, WA, and is sure to evoke passion and compassion from all involved. In conjunction with the American Heart Association's annual Go Red! Awareness initiative, Project Red Dress aims to support and honor the organization through this unique event.

The signature event for FGI Seattle offers local up-and-coming fashion design students a chance to show the world what they're made of. The event culminates with a gala fashion show at The Fairmount Olympic Hotel. In addition to the evening's celebrity guest judge, Nick Verreos of Project Runway fame, the fabulous and fun Brooke and Monti, co-hosts of MOViN 92.5's morning talk show program The Ladies Room will be this year's emcees of Project Red Dress.

Faculty from the Art Institute of Seattle, International Academy of Design and Technology, New York Fashion Academy, Seattle Central Community College, and Seattle Pacific University each selected two students from their fashion design programs to participate in this years contest.

Tickets for last year's sold-out event are now currently on sale at www.projectreddress.com through Brown Paper Tickets. 100 VIP tickets are available for $75 and include prime seating and a posh swag bag. General Admission tickets are available for $50 and a limited number of student tickets (must show ID at event) are available for $25. Tickets may be available at the door if not sold out.

Needed: Volunteers for Project Red Dress

We need your help! Volunteers for Project Red Dress (PDR) are needed in the following catagories:

* Graphic Design assistance - we need a volunteer with experience in graphic design to create our program. We have the copy, we need the skill of a graphic designer to put it all together. Can you help? You don't need to be a pro, just have some basic skill and lots of interest!

* Swag Bag Coordinator - we are currently collecting items for our 100 VIP swag bags, but need a coordinator to oversee these get done for the show. We can help supply student volunteers.

* Swag Bag and Judge donations - we are still procuring sponsor donations for items in the swag bags as well as gift packages for our Judges, Emcee, etc. If you have a company, work for a company, or know of companies that want some prime exposure please encourage them to consider sponsoring via swag bag donation.

In general, we can still use sponsors. Contact us via email or the PRD website if you are interested in being one!

Closer to the event we will be sending out a request for assistance the week and day of. Please email us if you have an idea of how you can help with the event.

7 Life Saving Tips on Shopping Black Friday and Beyond

Here are some shopping tips from FGI Member Mayna Sgaramella!
As a Wardrobe Consultant, I do a lot of personal shopping with my clients. But many people will be fighting the crowds on their own this holiday season. So here are some much needed tips on how to shop smart during the rush:

1. Know what you want. Ah, the key to all things in life. Well, you'd be surprised at how many people don't shop with a list during the holidays. Even with a list, things can get confusing. So, cozy up with some hot tea and spend a good hour looking up gifts in store catalogs, online, and in magazines. This will inspire you to create a list for all those on your list and it will give you ideas for yourself!

2. Research sales. Days before you plan to shop (like today), go online, look at advertisements in the paper, and call the store. Many associates are willing put items aside for you if you know what you want and call before the day of the sale. Ask if they do pre-sales where you buy the item over the phone at the sale price and just pick it up the day of the sale. You can even ask for the store manager and get his/her tips on shopping in their store.

3. Shop with a list. Don't just write down what you're getting, but also write down where you're going to buy it, the phone number of the store, and the store's special hours of operation (ask me about creating a spreadsheet of local stores tailored to your shopping needs). Treat it like efficient grocery shopping or running errands; start with the store where you can get the most checked off your list (a department store for example), and map out your route in regards to traffic or rush hour.

4. Keep a map of the mall with you before you shop in order to plan out parking, elevators (if you have kids in strollers), and restaurants (because you will get hungry). Use valet parking if it is available. It will be worth the money rather than waiting in traffic.

5. Set a time limit. Give yourself a couple hours in one large store, then hit a couple smaller shops and take a break. Keep a few snacks in your purse and drape it around your body for more hands free movement, but leave your coat in the car.

6. Start early and wear comfortable shoes. There are few ways to avoid long lines during this time of year, but go with a partner who will stand in line while you shop or hire a professional shopper who will shop for you. Try to beat the crowds by shopping during slow times, usually around store opening, late afternoon, or dinner time.

7. Be Flexible. Sometimes, that perfect gift you had in mind for your friend is just not available or is sold out. If you can keep the intention and meaning behind the gift, it will be easier to let go of the material aspect of it and you'll save yourself some unnecessary stress.
